The Finish flag follows the tradition of inclusion of a Nordic Cross. The flag was adopted on May 28, 1918. The territory of what now constitutes Finland has had a tumultuous past. In a Russian war with Sweden, that became known as ‘The Finnish War’ in 1809, the territory lost by Sweden became the ‘Grand Duchey of Finland’ in the Russian Empire. Following Finland’s independence from Russia following the 1917 revolution there, the flag was adopted as the national symbol to be publicly displayed wherever proper. Russia’s transition to a separate form of government did not mean Finland was left alone. In 1939 the new USSR invaded and attacked Finland in a war that lasted three months.
Finland recently joined NATO in 2023.
