Aruba is a constituent country to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Aruba was formally known by the Netherlands Antilles, and became a country on January 1, 1986. The island nation is located off the western coast of Venezuela and was originally a Spanish possession. In 1636 the Netherlands seized the island by force from Spain during the period of the Thirty Years War.
The island first brush with European explorers cam in 1499 when Amerigo Vespucci and Alonso de Ojeda made land fall. Amerigo’ s name would later become the namesake of the United States and the former British Colonies, America. The island was rich in oil later on and during World War II, it remained in control of the exile Netherlands government in London. This led to attack by the German Navy in 1942.
In later years an autonomy movement gained momentum in the 1970s and 1980s, eventually leading to independence in 1986. Though independent it remains under the care and defense of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
