The Chilean flag was adopted on October 18, 1817 and has a striking similarity to the flag of Texas in the United States. The Chilean flag predates the Texas flag by approximately 22 years.

Interpretations of the flags parts vary. Some say the white star signifies the planet Venus, an important entities to some indigenous groups. Others say it is a single star representing the independent state. The area of blue is for the Pacific Ocean and/or the sky. The white area invokes the snow of the Andes Mountains. The red may be for the blood spilled striving for independence.
