The second version of the Japanese flag is an eye catching design with a disc and multiple ray extending to the margins. It had been around since at least 1868 and was the standard of the Japanese Imperial Army, until occupied in 1945. This flag continues use officially as the ensign of the Japanese Maritime Defense Force, starting in 1954 and continuing to this day.
